Housing: local commitments from our leaders
All over the world, the housing sector is facing major challenges: access to housing, building safety and quality, the energy transition, and the reduction of carbon footprint.
While these issues are universal, they take different forms from one country to another. Wherever we operate, they demand local, practical, sustainable, and affordable solutions.
True to our purpose and our commitment to action, we work alongside our companies to make home a positive place to live for inhabitants.
Priorities and actions from our Positive Impacts leaders
Each company mobilizes its ecosystem to accelerate the transformation of the sector in terms of:
- Energy renovation,
- Access to affordable solutions,
- Decarbonizing operations
Through these testimonials, the Positive Impacts leaders from Leroy Merlin Portugal, France and Poland share their priorities, their actions and the results already achieved on the ground. These local commitments illustrate a shared ambition: to make every home a more comfortable and sustainable place to live.

Jacek HUTYRA Positive Impacts Leader – Leroy Merlin Poland
„In Poland, 70% of electricity comes from fossil fuels (50% from coal and 20% from other fossil fuels). Three million homes are still heated with coal, and more than one million households are real “energy vampires”, where a massive part of energy is wasted because it escapes outside due to lack of proper thermal insulation.
As a result, greenhouse gas emissions linked to both electricity production and heating homes are very high. Leroy Merlin Poland has therefore chosen to make access to energy renovation one of its key priorities, working closely with its partners and suppliers.
→ On the one hand, the product offering is evolving towards the least carbon-intensive solutions available (our Scope 3 product GHG emissions in 2025 are down by about -30% vs. 2021).
→ On the other hand, the “Eco Home” solution portfolio (“Oszczędny Dom ” in Polish) gives inhabitants safe and easy access to end-to-end energy renovation projects:
-
- Energy audit,
- Project structuring,
- Selection of complete solutions (products and installation),
- Mobilization of public subsidies and financing.
This approach is made possible to a large extent thanks to a ground-breaking exclusive partnership with a trusted partner, deployed across all Polish stores and online.
To involve all stakeholders, employees and customers are trained and informed about how an energy renovation project works. Moreover, we have recently created a new commercial job position of “Eco Home” advisor, present in every store to give customers expertise and support at each step of the way.
→ At the same time, the company is committed to reducing its own operational emissions by improving the energy efficiency of its buildings and switching to renewable electricity supply contracts (about -25% in 2025 with a target of at least -60% by 2027 vs. 2021).
We must take responsibility for the emissions for which we are either wholly or partially responsible, and support our customers in their thermal renovation journey so they can embark on such projects with peace of mind and confidence – allowing them to save money but also reduce emissions and pollution.”
Marie SIMUNIC Positive Impacts Leader – Leroy Merlin France
„In France, 36% of greenhouse gas emissions are linked to housing: construction, usage, renovation…, and 80% of the homes that will exist in 2050 have already been built.
It is the challenge of the century for Housing.
These figures sum up the challenges facing our sector and highlight the importance of the French energy renovation market. As a market leader, Leroy Merlin France plays a driving role.
→ First, by “doing our part” for the energy efficiency of our own buildings:
By the end of 2025, 70% of the energy used across all our infrastructures will come from renewable sources—already 53% in 2025.
→ We also support people across France by simplifying their energy renovation journeys:
Indeed, 7 out of 10 energy renovation projects are abandoned due to the stress of administrative procedures.
We have therefore created the role of Energy Renovation Manager in our stores.
Working alongside our suppliers, France Rénov’ agencies and installation partners, these certified advisors guide inhabitants in their product choices and help them access government subsidies. Thanks to our banking partners, we even offer zero-interest eco-loans and simplified financing pathways.
→ The challenge of energy renovation is also a social issue:
12 million people in France are currently affected by energy poverty, a situation that often leads to health issues, isolation or over-indebtedness. We have therefore chosen to act through the Stop à l’exclusion énergétique collective.
By donating €1 million per year to the association, we have helped 1,620 households escape energy poverty over the past 3 years, restoring comfort and dignity.
2026 is an important year for us, marking the development of our 10-year vision together with all our employees and our ecosystem. The vision of an innovative company, fully committed alongside its ecosystem to making home improvement accessible to everyone in France.
Transforming the housing sector in France cannot be done alone.
It is by working together with all our partners, employees and customers that we will succeed. That is why, this year, together with other institutions and partner companies, we are launching the Alliance for the Decarbonation of Housing.”
João LAVOS Positive Impacts Leader – Leroy Merlin Portugal
„Three major challenges are shaping the housing sector in Portugal:
- The housing shortage leading to a sharp increase in prices;
- The quality of construction at the national level;
- The energy transition affecting 16% of families, with housing responsible for nearly 40% of the country’s carbon emissions.
Leroy Merlin Portugal has taken ownership of these challenges and provides concrete and, above all, accessible solutions for everyone, guided by the ADEO Group vision: “We make home a positive place to live”.
→ Regarding the housing crisis:
The company has reduced prices on thousands of products and strengthened its partnerships with professionals. The Home Index, launched in Portugal in 2024, has also helped guide inhabitants toward more environmentally informed choices.
→ Facing the challenge of housing quality:
A dedicated offer, supported by educational initiatives, has been launched focusing on two main challenges: energy efficiency and leaks. To support the most vulnerable in the energy transition, Leroy Merlin Portugal and its partners created the Recria program—an ecosystem of volunteers and more than €300K in funding—to contribute to renovating around 50 homes per year.
→ Regarding greenhouse gas emissions from the housing sector:
Leroy Merlin is one of the most active and ambitious players in Portugal in decarbonising its operations. The product offering is being redesigned to prioritise lower-impact solutions. The company’s decarbonisation plan has reduced its footprint by 18.7% between 2021 and 2024. In parallel, circular economy solutions—rental, second life, repair—are being developed in stores and on the marketplace.
From an environmental standpoint, we are evolving our offering so that by 2027, 80% of it will be made up of more resource-efficient products. On the social front, we aim to bring more partners on board through the “Recria” program and secure a budget of €400K.
Our ambition: to renovate more than 100 homes, benefiting over 5,000 inhabitants.”
