ASSOCIATION FAMILIALE MULLIEZ

The company is taken over by the Association Familiale Mulliez.

20 GLORIOUS YEARS

In the early 1960s, Leroy-Merlin moves into new premises converted from a former coal storage site. Customers flock to these spacious premises and sales staff are swamped. The business introduces the concept of self-service sales, which is an immediate success.
The next decade signals the advent of the computer age.

DIFFICULT DAYS AHEAD

By the late 1970s, problems are beginning to emerge. Times have changed. The company's expansion has created weaknesses. Its management structure is inadequate.

A CLASH OF CULTURES

1979: a lack of financial strength is preventing Leroy Merlin from achieving optimal growth.
The company forges a link with the Auchan group which acquires 50% of its capital.
Lionel Leroy vs. Gérard Mulliez, the traditional versus the modern. There are conflicting objectives.

THE COMPANY CHANGES HANDS

1981: Auchan acquires full control of Leroy-Merlin.
